MySpace Loses 12 Years Of Data

Do you remember MySpace?

For awhile, it was the largest social media platform on the Internet, and was a playground of photo sharing, music clips that played when you visited a profile, and videos. MySpace played a massive role in the days of the early web, and was also pivotal for the social lives of many a teen in the 00's. It even beat GOOGLE as the #1 visited site when it was at it's peak popularity.

Of course, the rise of Facebook and Twitter inevitably relegated MySpace to it's current status; a reminder of an earlier, long since past Internet culture. The primary use for the platform transformed from being a bustling hub of activity to a glorified hosting platform for all of the old photos, videos, and music clips. Or at least it did, until a "server migration error" led to a complete loss of all data of anything uploaded prior to 2015.

While the chances that there was anything of paramount importance stored on their servers are low, there certainly will be many people wishing they had back ups or even physical copies of the memories now lost. While there's nothing much to be done about it now, this fumble by MySpace's technical teams highlights the importance of good, working backups. It's important for anybody to maintain copies of the data that is important for business operations or even that simply holds personal or sentimental value to you. If you don't, you might find yourself in a similar position to at least 75.9 million other users.
